Biography/History:

The Mitchell Shoe Company of Dover, NH moved into the former Bell Brothers shoe factory at 24 State Street, Biddeford in 1934 under the direction of Joseph and Julian Weinstein. In 1938 a wing was added, and by 1941 the company was producing almost 1,000,000 pairs of shoes annually. In 1943 the Weinsteins bought the company outright and it became a family-run business. Durring WWII the company produced Army boot cuffs for parachute troops. After the war the company went back to regular production. In 1951 the Lunder Company of Dover, NH purchased the pant and formed a new shoe-making concern by the name of Bruce Shoe Company, which remained in business until the late 1970’s/early 1980’s.
