Scope & Contents:
This collection was donated by Alice Haskell in 1941 and contains the personal papers of Joseph Libby. There are many small pieces of paper on which are written bills for services rendered, receipts paying for those services, as well as letters asking for payment for services and goods. There are also numerous court summonses, and legal documents against other family members over Martha Libby’s will.
Biography/History:
Joseph Libby was the constable of Biddeford at the turn of the 18th century, and lived in Biddeford and Saco. What little records can be found indicate he lived mostly in Saco, as his children were born there. He was born in Kittery, Maine in 1725 to Solomon Libby and Martha (Hanscom) Libby. He married Shuah Staples in Kittery, Maine in 1749, and they had 8 children, most of whom died young. Joseph Libby died in 1802 in Saco, at the age of 76.
